What we collect, and what we don’t.

This page describes what stem2mars.com actually does, written against the files that make it up rather than copied from a template. The short version: this site has no forms, no database, no server-side code and no cookies. The only personal data we ever receive is what you choose to email us, it goes to one mailbox, and nothing about you is sold, shared or added to a mailing list.

Applying to be an athlete

There is no form on this site. To apply, you email info@stem2mars.com from your own mail program, so the only personal information we receive is what you choose to write. The home page lists what is useful to include:

  • Your name, and the email address you want a reply at.
  • Where you are based, if you choose to say.
  • Your sport or discipline.
  • The objective you are chasing, in your own words.
  • The charity you want the effort to support, and its name if you nominate one.
  • A link, if you have one.

Your message is delivered to one mailbox. Like any email it carries your address and the time it was sent; we do not collect your IP address, run a database, or keep a separate record of it. We use what you send to reply to you and to decide whether to work together. We do not sell it, share it with anyone else, or add you to a mailing list. Ask us to delete it at any time, at the same address, and we will.

No analytics, no trackers, no advertising, no cookies

There is no analytics package on this site, no tag manager, no advertising pixel and no social login, and this site sets no cookies. There is no server-side code behind these pages: they are static files. Our web host keeps ordinary server access logs, as every web host does.

What your browser loads from other people

The home page and this page load nothing from any other domain. An attempt page is different, because it draws a map and, while an attempt is live, a temperature and weather radar. You should know who else your browser talks to while one is open:

  • unpkg.com serves the Leaflet mapping library used to draw the map, pinned to one version with a subresource-integrity hash.
  • OpenTopoMap and OpenStreetMap serve the map tiles.
  • RainViewer serves the precipitation radar frames drawn over the map of a live attempt. Archived attempt pages draw no radar.
  • Open-Meteo answers one request for the air temperature at the middle of the route, repeated every fifteen minutes while a live attempt page is open. It is sent a point on the trail, never your location. Archived attempt pages make no such request.

Those requests come from your browser, so those services can see your IP address and which tiles you asked for, under their own privacy policies rather than ours. An archived attempt’s position data is served from a stored copy of the track on this site, so your browser never contacts the tracking provider.

Donating

Every donate link on this site leaves stem2mars.com for the charity it names: our approved partner elevatekids.org by default, or the charity an athlete’s effort supports where one is named. We do not take payments, we never see your payment details, and anything you enter on the receiving charity’s site is covered by their policy, not this one.

Children

Applying to be an athlete is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent us something, email us and we will delete it.

Asking us anything about this

Write to info@stem2mars.com to see what we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted. There is no form to fill in and no account to close.

If this page and the site ever disagree, the site is the bug. Tell us and we will fix one of them.
